Bowen

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen is a dynamic, remedial body technique, that is extremely gentle and very relaxing. It empowers the body’s own healing resources achieving balance and harmony, resulting in fast and lasting relief from pain and discomfort.

It is an all embracing vibrational energy therapy, safe to use on anyone. From newborns to the elderly and with any condition from sports injuries to chronic or organic complaints.

Bowen facilitates the balancing of a broad range of conditions. It produces an integrated body response, and consequently improves circulation, lymphatic and venous draining, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins, joint mobility, posture, clearance of dysfunctional debris, normalization of  cellular physiology and tissue integrity.

A treatment comprises sequences of small gentle moves, each at a specific site on the body. There is no forceful manipulation, just a light cross-fiber maneuvering of a muscle, tendon or ligament, pleasant to the recipient. However, fascia plays a very important role in this technique.

The precise location of the Bowen moves correlate markedly with the latest  research into the meridian energy system, acu-points and myofascial trigger point  therapy.

Observation also suggests the lymphatic system is greatly affected by this technique.

This gentle and effective modality brings substantial relief frequently after the first session, and generally clients may only need two or three treatments, usually one week apart.

Treatments can be done through clothing if preferred, as no oils are used, and sessions can last from 10 to 60 minutes.

While receiving Bowen Therapy is a gentle and mostly relaxing experience, you need to be aware that the treatment works at a cellular level and can continue to work up to 48 - 72 hours throughout the body. Some  people have very quick and profound results, while others may not notice too much change for a few sessions. This is often related to hydration levels.

Some responses that have been experienced vary from sudden increase in energy levels and feeling of well being, to sleepiness, soreness, temporary change in sleep patterns, increased urination or bowel movement or even emotional response. These responses occur because the body is going through a healing and detoxification process, expelling metabolic wastes and excess fluids.

About Tom Bowen

Tom Bowen

Tom Bowen (1916 – 1982) devoted a lifetime to developing his gentle and innovative
approach, in Geelong, Australia. He was born in Brunswick and had no formal medical training.

He commenced by practising massage for local clubs until his practice grew so large, he was forced to “do something about it”. His technique evolved throughout his many years of practice.

In the interview for the Webb Report of 1975, an Australian Government survey on natural therapies, this revealed Tom to be treating some 13000 patients per year.

His approach was a simple energy correction procedure to instigate a change in the balance of the body, bringing the body’s innate healing abilities back to action.

With time he evolved his technique from his work he did in the sixties and early seventies to that in the early eighties, just prior to his death.
